Sleep Calculators and Guides

Everything on Vanta Calc about when to sleep and when to wake. The calculators and guides below use the same maths: 90-minute sleep cycles, plus the 14 minutes most people take to fall asleep, so the alarm lands at the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of one.

Sleep calculators: frequently asked questions

How do the sleep calculators work?
They work backwards or forwards from a time using 90-minute sleep cycles plus the minutes you take to fall asleep. The NHLBI describes sleep cycles of 80 to 100 minutes that repeat four to six times a night, so the results are planning targets rather than exact rules.
How much sleep do adults need?
Adults are advised to get 7 or more hours of sleep a night (CDC). In cycles, that is five (7.5 hours) or six (9 hours); four cycles is 6 hours. The table on this page shows recommended sleep for every age group.
Which sleep page should I start with?
Start with the Sleep Cycle Calculator, which handles any bedtime or wake-up time. If you already know your alarm is at 4, 5, 6 or 7 AM, the matching guide shows the bedtimes, how the evening has to look, and what a fixed bedtime gives you.
