Quick Tips
Double check your inputs. Ensure units match (e.g., inches vs cm).
How to Use This Calculator
For a planned trip: enter the distance, your vehicle MPG, and the fuel price per gallon; check round-trip if applicable. For an actual trip: enter the odometer readings at start and end, the fuel used, and the price paid. Click Calculate to see total fuel cost and cost per mile.
Understanding the Formula
Fuel = Distance / MPG. Cost = Fuel × Price. Cost per mile = Cost / Distance.
Examples
Planned Road Trip
A 350-mile trip in a car getting 28 MPG with gas at $3.50/gallon: 350 / 28 = 12.5 gallons × $3.50 = $43.75 total, or $0.125 per mile.
Actual Trip Calculation
Odometer start: 45,200. Odometer end: 45,520. Distance = 320 miles. Fuel used: 11.2 gallons. Actual MPG = 28.6. At $3.60/gallon, cost = $40.32.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my vehicle MPG?
Check fueleconomy.gov for EPA estimates, or calculate it yourself: fill your tank, drive, refill, and divide miles driven by gallons used.
