Understanding the Formula
Weighted grade = Σ(category avg × weight). Grade needed = (desired − weighted) / final weight × 100.
Examples
Weighted Course Grade
Tests (50%) avg 88, Homework (30%) avg 95, Participation (20%) avg 80. Weighted grade = 0.5×88 + 0.3×95 + 0.2×80 = 44 + 28.5 + 16 = 88.5%.
Grade Needed on Final
Current weighted grade is 82% (from 70% of coursework). Final is worth 30%. To get a 90% overall, you need (90 − 0.7×82) / 0.3 = 108.7% on the final — not possible, so aim for a lower target.
